Description of Job

Position Duties:

  • Public relations strategies/planning
    • Develops and designs messaging and all traditional and online media strategies in alignment with the Department goals.
    • Prepares speeches and statements for the Secretary and other Department staff.
    • Supports the work of Department staff by developing communication strategies, public materials, and written content related to policy questions and/or outreach opportunities.
  • Media relations
    • Responds to press calls and inquiries on behalf of the Department.
    • Acts as primary representative for media inquiries and coordinates responses with Department staff when needed.
    • Drafts and distributes press releases, public statements, op-eds and social media to applicable staff.
  • Public Information
    • Collaborates with staff to provide information under Colorado Open Records Act.
    • Supports the Department’s web presence and identifies additional opportunities to share information via website, social media platforms, etc.
  • Oversight of Personnel
    • Supervises Assistant Communication Director position.
    • Ensures assistant position is contributing to overall communications strategies.
    • Ensures compliance with personnel policies and procedures.

Assignments for this position are diverse in nature and require determining practical solutions in a fast-paced environment. This person will work independently, manage tight schedules, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and sometimes work nights and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in:
    • Developing and implementing communications strategies;
    • Social media and media relations;
    • Writing or content creation.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Public Affairs, Political Science, Digital Marketing, or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least six years of experience in:
    • Developing and implementing communications strategies;
    • Social media and media relations;
    • Writing or content creation.
  • Data analytics experience.
  • Experience developing graphic and video content.
